Del McCoury Band

Born in 1939 in Bakersville, North Carolina, Del McCoury is one of the most best known names in the field of bluegrass music. Today, McCoury performs as a part of his eponymously named band, which is made up of his pair of sons, Ronnie (mandolin) and Rob McCoury (banjo).

Del McCoury started his career with the famous Bluegrass Boys of Bill Monroe during the folk revival period in the early 1960’s. Besides playing the banjo, McCoury also contributed vocals and occasionally played the rhythm guitar for the band. His first performance as part of the band took place on the Grand Ole Opry.

It was only during the 1980’s that his sons joined him in his performances. A decade after, Mike Brantley (bass) and Tad Marks (fiddle) became part of the group as well and the band had enjoyed a successful tour throughout the country.

Relocating to Nashville, Tennessee was a particularly good move for the band as it brought them greater success on the music front. More members joined the band, including Mike Bub (bass) and Jason Carter (fiddle) in 1992 and Alan Bartram (bass) in 2005.

As of 2009, Del McCoury and his band had won a grand total of 31 awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards , including becoming a four-time consecutive recipient of the Entertainer of the Year award. McCoury himself is a multiple recipient of the Male Vocalist of the Year from the same award giving body.

In 2004, the band received its first Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album. Two years after, the group went on to win the said Grammy for their album The Company We Keep.

In 2008, McCoury and his band officially launched their own bluegrass festival at the Allegany County Fairgrounds in Cumberland, Maryland.
