Bluegrass Music Crash Course

Bluegrass Music

If you’re looking for All-American music then there’s no better genre than bluegrass music. It combines the best of country and jazz and mesmerizes listeners with the instrumental virtuosity of its performers as well as the impressive vocal harmonies often featured in bluegrass music. For a crash course on bluegrass, here are a couple of artists you should watch out for.

Dailey & Vincent

This spectacular duo is composed of Jamie Dailey & Darrin Vincent. Their self-titled debut album, released in 2008, had been well-received by bluegrass fans and catapulted them to stardom. It also earned a grand total of seven IBMA awards, including the prestigious Album and Entertainment of the Year awards. You can easily catch them performing live as they’re very much active in the festival circuit.

Sam Bush

Popularly referred to as King of Newgrass and King of Telluride, Sam Bush has received various awards from IBMA and even the Grammys. He has also recently received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Music Association. If, however, you think that’s his cue to retire, think again. Bush, who has also recently released his latest album, Circles Around Me, is showing no signs of stopping and is a favorite guest for numerous bluegrass events.

Besides bluegrass music, Bush has also made a career out of fusing his work with a little bit of everything, from jazz to funk. He’s also collaborated with other famous artists such as Garth Brooks and Emmylou Harris.

David Grisman Bluegrass Experience

The artist also known as “Dawg”, David Grisman is yet another performer that has made significant contribution to the world of bluegrass. Grisman plays the mandolin and, like Bush, is considered one of the pioneers of newgrass. His song, Dawggy Mountain Breakdown, is currently used as theme music for Car Talk of NPC. In the early 1990’s, Grisman had also set up a recording label, Acoustic Disc, in an effort to preserve not just bluegrass music but also acoustic music in general.  Throughout his career, Grisman had worked with numerous artists, including close friend and Grateful Dead lead vocalist Jerry Garcia, the Kronos Quartet, and various bluegrass legends such as Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, and Tony Rice.

Crooked Still

The band is composed of Corey DiMario (double bass), Tristan Clarridge (cello), Brittany Haas (fiddle), Gregory Liszt (banjo), and Aoife O’Donovan as the band’s lead vocalist. Although still quite new compared to the others in this list, Crooked Still is continuously making waves in the bluegrass scene and is definitely has a long way to go!
